On our first day with both Abby and Razzu at work, Damian and I set out to explore downtown Santa Fe on our own. Well, it didn't quite happen like that. First we slept in, then we met up with Abby for a very extended coffee break and then we were on our own out and about.
As a first stop, we took a nap with the bears.
Turns out that aside from coffee with Abby we hadn't really eaten much for breakfast - so though we started to tour the capital building after our nap with the bears, we got hungry and decided to grab some lunch then return to the capital.
And a massive lunch it was. Here's the guilty party - Guadalupe Cafe:
We split a crab chimichanga and a chicken chalupa. We got one with green chile sauce and another with red. And we spied on other people's plates: the salads were massive (the bowls were about twice the size of my face) and the sandwiches were pretty much one big loaf of bread sliced down the middle with fillings inside (we almost started to place bets on whether the women beside us eating their sandwiches would even finish a quarter of it...they did pretty well actually, they ate almost half).
Me and the chicken chalupa.
Crab chimichanga. There must have been about 20 crabs-worth of meat in this thing.
We highly recommend Guadalupe Cafe. Just beware that it's a 'very popular restaurant' (as the hostess at the front didn't hesitate to tell us) and usually has a long waiting line. We pretty much rolled out of there, our stomachs hurting from so much food and from downing a lot of water (gotta stay hydrated!).
So, with our bellies filled to the brim we went back to the State Capital and this time I was able to focus on all the artwork since my stomach wasn't grumbling.
Lots of cool art - this buffalo head was made out of all sorts of random things: negatives, plastic spoons, fishing reels, old newspapers, old fabric, paintbrushes, and the list goes on.

Me.
And me how I was really feeling inside. Did I mention we ate a ton of food just before this wandering around the capital building?
Back out in the sunshine. This is what the majority of New Mexico buildings and houses look like. It's like walking around in a make-believe town.
Mr. Pig - he was enjoying a nice scratch behind the ears.
He might not have enjoyed his nose being picked quite as much; but if he minded he definitely didn't show it!
This is one happy pig.
Lots of chile's.
Chile's and cow skulls.
More fun art.
And, on our walk back home we just had to say hi to the elephants.
And do some gymnastics.
Where's Damian?
Walking with the elephants.
And giving them some hugs.
The crow was thirsty so I offered him some water. He gladly accepted.
Naptime with the bull.
I would say Razzu did a better job looking like Emu's, but E for effort for Damian!
Raven Rodeo!
Good times. There's a lot to be said for being easily amused. :)
